Terms of Service
Please read these terms carefully before making a vehicle rental reservation through carbarcelon.com.
1. Agreement and Acceptance
By accessing or using the carbarcelon.com website, browsing available vehicles, submitting a booking request, or completing a reservation through our platform, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service in their entirety. These terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you (the customer) and carbarcelon.com, a vehicle rental comparison and booking platform operating in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
If you do not agree with any part of these terms, you must discontinue use of this website immediately and refrain from making any bookings. Continued use of the site following any updates to these Terms of Service will constitute your acceptance of the revised terms. We recommend reviewing this page periodically.
These Terms of Service apply to all visitors, registered users, and persons who access or use any service offered through carbarcelon.com, including but not limited to vehicle search, booking, comparison, and customer support functions.
2. Eligibility Requirements for Vehicle Rental in Barcelona
Minimum Age for Renting a Car in Barcelona
To rent a vehicle through carbarcelon.com, the primary driver must be at least 21 years of age at the time of vehicle pickup. Drivers aged 21 to 24 are considered young drivers and will typically be subject to a young driver surcharge applied by the rental supplier, generally ranging from EUR 10 to EUR 15 per day depending on the vehicle category selected.
For premium, luxury, or high-value vehicle categories - including convertibles, full-size SUVs, and executive sedans - some rental suppliers operating in Barcelona require the primary driver to be at least 25 years of age. This restriction will be clearly displayed during the booking process before payment is required.
There is no stated maximum age for renting a vehicle in Barcelona, though some individual rental companies may apply their own policies. Customers are advised to verify supplier-specific age restrictions during checkout.
Driving Licence Requirements
All drivers must hold a valid, unexpired driving licence that has been held for a minimum of one year at the time of rental. Drivers holding a licence issued by a European Union or European Economic Area member state are not required to obtain any additional documentation.
Visitors holding a driving licence issued outside the EU or EEA - including licences from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and other non-EU nations - are strongly advised to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national driving licence. While some rental suppliers in Barcelona may accept non-EU licences with an official certified translation, an IDP issued under the 1949 or 1968 Vienna Convention is the most universally accepted form of documentation and reduces the risk of any issues at the rental counter.
Failure to present a valid and acceptable driving licence at the time of vehicle collection will result in the rental being refused by the supplier. carbarcelon.com accepts no liability for denied rentals resulting from insufficient or invalid licence documentation.
Additional Driver Eligibility
If you wish to add an additional authorised driver to your rental agreement, that person must also meet all eligibility requirements outlined above and must be present at the rental desk with their own valid driving documentation at the time of vehicle collection. Additional driver fees may apply and will be disclosed during the booking process or at the rental counter.
3. Bookings, Reservations, and Cancellation Policy
Making a Reservation Through carbarcelon.com
All vehicle rental reservations made through carbarcelon.com are subject to availability from our network of rental suppliers operating across Barcelona, including locations at Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport (BCN), Barcelona Sants railway station, Passeig de Gracia, and the Gothic Quarter. Submitting a booking request through our platform initiates a reservation with the relevant rental supplier and generates a confirmation voucher sent to the email address provided at checkout.
Your booking confirmation constitutes a contract between you and the rental supplier, subject to their own individual rental agreement which you will be required to sign at the point of vehicle collection. carbarcelon.com acts as an intermediary booking platform and is not a party to the rental contract between you and the supplier.
Free Cancellation Policy for Barcelona Vehicle Hire
Most reservations made through carbarcelon.com include free cancellation when the cancellation request is submitted at least 48 hours before the confirmed pickup date and time. In such cases, any prepaid amounts will be refunded in full to the original payment method within 5 to 10 business days, subject to your payment provider's processing times.
Cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled pickup time may be subject to a cancellation fee equivalent to one day's rental value, or the first day's rental charge, depending on the specific supplier's policy. The applicable cancellation terms for each booking will be clearly displayed before you confirm your reservation.
No-Show Policy
If you fail to collect your reserved vehicle at the agreed pickup location and time without prior cancellation notification, this will be treated as a no-show. No-shows are generally non-refundable. Prepaid rental fees for no-show bookings will not be reimbursed unless the no-show was caused by circumstances entirely outside your control and documented appropriately (for example, a cancelled flight with official airline documentation).
If you anticipate arriving later than your scheduled pickup time - for instance due to a delayed flight into El Prat airport - please contact the rental supplier or carbarcelon.com as early as possible. Most suppliers will hold the vehicle for up to two hours beyond the reserved time, but this is not guaranteed without prior communication.
Amendments to Reservations
Requests to amend booking dates, vehicle category, pickup or drop-off location, or the addition of extras such as a child seat or GPS navigator should be submitted as early as possible. Amendments are subject to supplier availability and may result in a price adjustment. carbarcelon.com will endeavour to facilitate amendments but cannot guarantee that all changes can be accommodated.
4. Pricing, Payment, and Optional Extras
Displayed Currency and Pricing for Car Hire in Barcelona
All prices displayed on carbarcelon.com are shown in Euros (EUR) unless otherwise stated. Prices are inclusive of the base vehicle rental rate and any standard inclusions communicated at the time of search. Prices shown are subject to change until the point of booking confirmation and may vary based on rental duration, vehicle category, season, and applicable local taxes including Spanish IVA (VAT).
Economy vehicle rentals in Barcelona are available from approximately EUR 19 per day in low season. SUV and family vehicle hire typically starts from EUR 35 per day. Luxury and convertible rentals begin from around EUR 65 per day. These indicative prices do not guarantee availability at any specific time and are provided for budgeting guidance only.
What Is Included in Your Rental Price
The base rental price confirmed at checkout will always include the vehicle itself, basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance with an applicable excess, Theft Protection (TP), and unlimited mileage where explicitly stated. Third-party liability insurance as required by Spanish law is also included in all rentals.
Items that are not included in the base price unless explicitly stated include: premium fuel service (full-to-full or full-to-empty fuel policies apply per supplier), additional driver fees, young driver surcharges, one-way drop-off fees for cross-region rentals, airport service charges, and optional rental extras.
Optional Extras and Add-Ons
The following optional extras may be available for addition to your rental booking, either during the online booking process or at the rental counter in Barcelona:
- Child seat or infant seat (required under Spanish traffic regulations for children under 135cm in height or 36kg in weight)
- Booster seat for older children
- GPS navigation device (typically EUR 5 to EUR 8 per day)
- Portable wifi hotspot
- Additional authorised driver
- Roadside assistance package
- Reduced excess or Super CDW upgrade
- Snow chains (relevant for routes into the Pyrenees or through the Collserola hills in winter)
Optional extras added at the rental counter are subject to the supplier's prevailing rates at the time of collection and may differ from indicative prices displayed during online booking.
Fuel Policy
The fuel policy applicable to your rental will be clearly stated in your booking confirmation. The most common policies are full-to-full (collect with a full tank, return with a full tank) and full-to-empty (prepay for a full tank and return empty). carbarcelon.com strongly recommends the full-to-full policy to avoid unnecessary fuel charges. Fuel costs are not included in rental prices and are the responsibility of the renter.
5. Permitted and Prohibited Use of Rental Vehicles
Lawful Use of Rental Vehicles in Catalonia and Spain
All vehicles rented through carbarcelon.com must be used in accordance with the traffic laws and regulations of Spain and Catalonia, including applicable provisions of the Ley de Trafico, Circulacion de Vehiculos a Motor y Seguridad Vial. Drivers are responsible for familiarising themselves with local road rules, including speed limits on Barcelona's urban streets (typically 30 km/h in residential zones), the Ronda de Dalt and Ronda del Litoral ring roads, the C-32 coastal autopista toward Sitges, and the AP-7 motorway connecting Barcelona to Girona and the French border.
Rental vehicles may be driven in Spain, and in certain other EU member states where permitted by your specific rental agreement. Please check your booking confirmation for territorial restrictions before planning any international journey. Cross-border travel to countries outside those listed in your rental agreement requires prior written approval from the rental supplier and is not automatically permitted.
Prohibited Activities
The following activities are strictly prohibited when using a vehicle rented through carbarcelon.com and will void any insurance coverage and result in full liability for any resulting damage or legal consequences:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol (over the Spanish legal limit of 0.5 g/L blood alcohol concentration, or 0.3 g/L for drivers with less than two years' licence experience) or any illegal substances
- Off-road driving on unpaved, unsurfaced, or unmaintained tracks not designated for standard road vehicles
- Use of the vehicle in any form of motor sport, racing, rally, speed testing, or competitive driving event
- Subletting, hiring out, or otherwise transferring use of the vehicle to any unauthorised third party
- Using the vehicle to transport fare-paying passengers for commercial purposes without prior authorisation
- Transporting hazardous, illegal, or prohibited materials
- Towing any trailer, caravan, or other vehicle unless the rental agreement expressly permits towing
- Driving on any route or terrain that is clearly unsafe or would expose the vehicle to excessive risk of damage
- Permitting any person not listed on the rental agreement as an authorised driver to operate the vehicle
Breach of any of the above prohibited use conditions will render the renter fully liable for all associated costs, penalties, and damages. carbarcelon.com reserves the right to pursue recovery of such costs and to report relevant information to the appropriate authorities where required by law.
6. Insurance and Liability
Basic Insurance Included with Every Barcelona Vehicle Rental
All vehicle rentals confirmed through carbarcelon.com include a minimum level of insurance coverage as standard. This includes basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) reducing the renter's financial liability in the event of accidental damage to the rented vehicle, Theft Protection (TP) covering loss of the vehicle due to theft, and third-party liability insurance as mandated under Spanish insurance law (Ley sobre responsabilidad civil y seguro en la circulacion de vehiculos a motor).
Basic CDW coverage typically carries a damage excess (the amount the renter is liable for before insurance applies) of between EUR 500 and EUR 1,200 depending on the vehicle category and the rental supplier. The exact excess applicable to your booking will be stated in your confirmation documentation.
Optional Insurance Upgrade and Reduced Excess
Customers wishing to reduce or eliminate their financial excess liability may purchase an optional Super CDW or Zero Excess protection upgrade. These upgrades are available during the online booking process or at the rental counter and cover damage to tyres, windscreen, glass, and the undercarriage of the vehicle - areas frequently excluded from basic CDW coverage.
Premium full coverage protection with zero excess is available at an additional daily rate and provides the most comprehensive cover for renters planning longer journeys from Barcelona, such as road trips to Costa Brava, Montserrat, the Pyrenees, or beyond into southern France.
Exclusions from Insurance Coverage
Insurance coverage under any plan will be voided and the renter will be held fully liable for all costs in the following circumstances: damage occurring as a result of any prohibited activity listed in Section 5; damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; deliberate or intentional damage to the vehicle; damage resulting from driving outside the approved geographical territory without prior written authorisation; and damage to the interior of the vehicle not covered by CDW terms.
7. Limitation of Liability
carbarcelon.com operates as a booking intermediary and comparison platform. We facilitate connections between customers and independent vehicle rental suppliers operating in Barcelona and the wider Catalonia region. carbarcelon.com is not the rental company and is not party to the vehicle rental contract executed at the rental desk between the customer and the supplier.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable Spanish and EU consumer protection law, carbarcelon.com's aggregate liability to any customer in connection with any booking made through this platform shall not exceed the total booking fee paid by the customer to carbarcelon.com in connection with that specific transaction.
carbarcelon.com shall not be liable for: the actions or omissions of any rental supplier; vehicle availability or condition at the time of collection; delays or disruptions to vehicle pickup or return services; losses, damages, or personal injury arising from use of a rental vehicle; third-party service failures including but not limited to airline delays affecting rental pickup; or any indirect, consequential, or punitive losses.
Nothing in these Terms of Service shall operate to limit or exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under Spanish or EU law, including rights afforded to consumers under Directive 2011/83/EU and the Spanish Ley General para la Defensa de los Consumidores y Usuarios.
8. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
These Terms of Service and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them, their subject matter, or their formation (including non-contractual disputes and claims) shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Spain, with specific reference to the legislation of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia where applicable.
Any legal proceedings arising from these terms or from any booking made through carbarcelon.com shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of Barcelona, Spain, unless mandatory consumer protection provisions applicable in your country of residence require otherwise.
EU residents retain all rights afforded to them under applicable European Union consumer protection legislation, including the right to seek alternative dispute resolution through the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform, accessible at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
